Portfolio

PROJECT CORRECTIONS/TIME SPENT
I spent two and a half hours making corrections on my coding project and montage project.

DESCRIPTION
Design a portfolio that showcases all projects from my Visual Media course.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. I made corrections to various projects.
2. I then sketched out some ideas for the portfolio design.
3. I opened InDesign and created my multi-page document.
4. I used Photoshop to make the design and then I placed the PSD file in InDesign.
5. I created master pages of the text boxes so that they would be in the same position on each project page.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Danny Goker and Andy Grammy for my critiques via Skype. They were really helpful in the suggestions they gave. They helped me to simplify and pay attention to details. Danny mentioned some things that I could change on the table of contents so that it wasn’t too chaotic. Andy suggested I add some color, but I specifically wanted to keep it black and white to make the projects stand out so I didn’t change that.

Facebook Critiques: Paula Lithgow and Jason Nigel
One-on-One Critique: Katrina Deely
Instructor Critique: My instructor told me to position the text in a more organized way.

MESSAGE
I want to showcase my work in a professional way.

AUDIENCE
Potential client and employers.

TOP THING LEARNED
You should always sketch out ideas before you get on the computer.

Title frontBack 4-5-6 pagesTitle-2-3-pages

DESCRIPTION
Design a brochure for a company.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. I first created the logo in Illustrator.
2. Then I went into InDesign and started to design my brochure. I wrote my body copy and added the body copy so I knew how I want it to fit.
3. I saved the images as Photoshop documents so when I was in InDesign I could edit the original and it would open in Photoshop. Then I could edit the coloring, etc and it would automatically update the link in InDesign.
4. I then exported the brochure document as JPEGS.
5. Even though it wasn’t required, I placed the brochure in a mockup so it would be easy to see how it would look.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Tom Myers and Lindsey May for my critiques via Skype. They were really helpful in the suggestions they gave. I originally had an image of a red curtain on the back but he felt it didn’t really flow with the rest of the brochure so I found a different image of the bokeh. Lindsay helped me to realize some placement of the text could be switched up. I made those changes and it was very helpful for the final product.

Facebook Critiques: Trent Richardson and Ryan Richards
One-on-One Critique: Alisa Hobby
Instructor Critique: My instructor told me to make sure the colors in the images matched my color scheme. I decided to adjust the coloring of the images in Photoshop to better match the scheme.

MESSAGE
To provide older dancers with the ability to shine their light through dance.

AUDIENCE
Dancers ages 18 and older.

TOP THING LEARNED
It’s best to fold a piece of paper and then mark up where the front/back etc so it’s easier to design in InDesign.

Web Page Mockup Project

10ANicoleNugent

DESCRIPTION
Design a website homepage using a grid.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. I first picked an idea of what I was going to use for the basis of my website. I chose the same cat
adoption center I used in the previous project.
2. I then started sketching an idea of how I wanted to lay it out. I knew I wanted some images of cats at the beginning to grab viewers’ attention and be easy to navigate.
3. After I sketched it on paper, I then jumped into Photoshop and opened the 16-column grid. I started to create my wireframe to get me started.
4. After my wireframe, I started to add the actual content.
5. My final design ended up being a little different from my original sketch and wireframe as I realized the pictures would have been smaller if I did 3 on a line. So I decided to go with 2 and just added another image. 10ANicoleNugentSketches 10ANicoleNugentWireframe

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Ben Reckon and Sara Borelly for my critiques via Skype. They were really helpful in the suggestions they gave. They helped me in the placement of certain options. For example, I originally had the tagline on top of the teal bar, but Ben recommended that I but the bar behind the navigation instead. Sara mentioned that the logo was really large so I made it smaller and it fit better with everything else.

Facebook Critiques: Jake Dance and Jon McDonald
One-on-One Critique: Tim McConnell
Instructor Critique: My instructor reminded me to simplify and still leave some white space so I made sure I had that in my final draft.

MESSAGE

HTML & CSS Coding Project

9ANicoleNugent

DESCRIPTION
Code a custom webpage with HTML and CSS.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. First I created my logo in Illustrator. I love cats so I decided to go that route.
2. I resized my logo to be no longer than 500 px on the long side.
3. I created my HTML file and started adding my content and tags.
4. Then I created my CSS file and made sure to link it in the HTML code.
5. I made customizations in my CSS to match the colors in my logo and changed the fonts to what I preferred.
6. I created the background by creating an image with the yellow gradient and then used that image as my background in my HTML code.
7. I then made sure to validate my HTML and CSS.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Kat Smith and Kit Joy for my critiques via Skype. They were really helpful in the suggestions they gave. I originally had blue and yellow as my colors, but Kat reminded me that isn’t quite a color scheme. So I adjusted it to be purple and yellow – a true complimentary color scheme. Kit told me other things to fix like a typo I had missed (it’s important to have others proofread because you will miss something even though you think you didn’t).

Facebook Critiques: Sean Dollar and Kelly Connor.
One-on-One Critique: Shane Oakland
Instructor Critique: My instructor didn’t have a lot of critique other than the same thing that Kat mentioned about the colors.

MESSAGE
Adopt a cat and be happy because of it.

AUDIENCE
Those interested in adopting a cat.

TOP THING LEARNED

Infographic Project

DESCRIPTION
Create an infographic that organizes data in a visually pleasing way.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. I started brainstorming some topics and ended up with the idea of the seasons.
2. I did some research to find some data and found a study where Americans were asked what their favorite season was.
3. I also conducted a research on my Facebook page and asked people what their favorite season was and why.
4. I then sketched out some graphics that I knew I wanted to include in the infographic.
5. Next I opened up Illustrator and started on my Infographic.
6. I created the pie charts and other graphics to organize the data.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Ed Edwards and Bron Peary for my critiques via Skype. They were really helpful in the suggestions they gave. Eddie helped me with my color scheme and Bron suggested some layout changes. They had some other minor suggestions like changing the title to make better sense.

Facebook Critiques: Nate Williams and Lynette Olsen
One-on-One Critique: Payson Michael
Instructor Critique: It was recommended that I work on alignment on the bottom part of the infographic.

MESSAGE

Business Identity

7ANicoleNugent-02

DESCRIPTION
Create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish a visual identity across documents.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. I first sketched out some ideas for the logo on paper. I had a lot of different options.
2. After sketching, I opened up Illustrator and started creating some of my sketches digitally.
3. I came up with some options, but felt I needed to go back to sketching some more ideas.4. I felt better this time around and was able to create three different options in Illustrator.
5. I wanted to have more of a type logo, a symbol logo, and an illustration logo.
6. I got votes from various people on which was their favorite. It helped me to narrow it down to the one I would use to move on.
7. I chose the illustration logo and then created my letterhead and business card.
8. I made sure to follow the rule of alignment and repetition.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Donny Oz and Marie Mond for my critiques via Skype. It was interesting because I got different opinions from both of them. Donny told me to change the color scheme (I originally had a monochromatic) and I’m glad he did because it looks a lot better with the complementary color scheme. Marie had more detailed things to change such as the positioning and alignment of certain objects. They both really liked my logo though and so that made me feel good.

Facebook Critiques: Clark Wilbert and Tim Clark
One-on-One Critique: Brendyn Young
Instructor Critique: It was recommended that I work on sprucing up the back of my business card from the design I previously had. It was too dull.

Montage Project

6ANicoleNugent

DESCRIPTION
Design a spiritual poster montage using the blend of images and type.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
I had an idea of the montage I wanted to create to start out with. I wanted to create a montage that looked like a realistic picture. Here is the process I followed:
1. In Photoshop I combined all the various pictures I used to create the montage effect. I used a variety of layer masks and the brush tool to create the gradual blended effect.
2. I then found a quote I liked and added the text on the image.
3. I made sure to abide by the design principles such as alignment, repetition, and flow.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I met with Sandy George and Yute Ah for my critique via Skype and in person. They told some things they liked and didn’t like regarding the montage, but it was more of a personal opinion so I didn’t change those things. The things they did tell me to change were regarding the typography. I had everything a little larger but Sandy suggested I reduce the size to make it more impactful. Yute made a comment about removing the line across the top, but I felt it added to the flow so I decided to keep it.

Facebook Critiques: John Jacob and J.H. Schmidt
One-on-One Critique: Juan Pedro
Instructor Critique: It was recommended that I reduce the size of the typography. After doing so I realized it made it more impactful and not as “yelling-in-your-face”.
